Sometimes Jordan almonds, customized playing cards, and humorous shot glasses are just not enough for a wedding event.  For couples who want to give a favor that’s unique and reflects their values, choosing the right wedding favor can be a chore.   But it doesn’t have to be with the Hudson Valley Seed Company whose heirloom seed packets are beloved by gardeners across the country for what they grow and the artwork they’re packaged in.

Based in Accord, in New York’s Ulster County, the Hudson Valley Seed Company was founded in 2004 by former librarian Ken Greene.  Originally the company was known as the Hudson Valley Seed Library because it began as a project in the village of Gardiner’s library.  Its goal was to spark an interest in organic seed collecting and plant diversity.  By 2008, the popularity of the project spurred Ken and his partner Doug Muller to quit their jobs in order to build their seed library into the enterprise it is today.

The Hudson Valley Seed Company now sells organic seeds, soil, fertilizers, tools, and gardening supplies through its website.  But what they are best known for are their Art Pack seeds which are beautifully packed in colorful artwork from various artists throughout the United States and abroad.  Each variety of seed gets its own special packaging created by an individual artist whose work is selected annually from an open call.  The packaging art is so popular that the originals travel to art galleries across the U.S., and prints can be purchased through the seed company’s website.

It is these Art Packs that bring couples to the Hudson Valley Seed Company to acquire that extra special favor to give to their guests — one which allows them to take a little bit of the Hudson Valley back to their home gardens, to enjoy long after the last wedding toast.

Each one a work of art! Art Packs have unique designs for each variety of seed, created by individual artists from as far away as the UK.

Some couples are also incorporating the Art Packs into their event decor.  Since the outer envelopes of seed packs open into a larger artworks (see our unboxing video below), they can be used in place of numbers on tabletops.  “Instead of table number seven, your seating card would direct you to the oregano table,” explains Ken Greene.

Art Packs can also be sent out along with invitations or thank-you cards, and the Hudson Valley Seed Company offers a number of die-cut card designs which allow the art works to show through cut outs of birds, butterflies, and plants.

Couples can purchase the art packs in bulk as low as $2.17 per pack, or $2.42 per pack with a custom sticker, depending on quantity.  The stickers can be printed with a design supplied by a client, or with a readymade design template.  When ordering seed packs with custom stickers, couples should allow for a 1 week processing time.

Aside from their beauty, the seed packs actually are helping Mother Nature do her job.  “All of our seeds are open-pollinated and are certified organic, non-GMO,” says Ken.  “We are careful about spacing plants to make sure there is no cross-pollination, which is why we have several different fields in other parts of the region to keep certain plants isolated.  Many of our seeds have been given to us by local farmers and are handed down from generations, and haven’t been touched by gene manipulation.”

Among the many benefits of fruits and vegetables grown from heirloom seeds are better taste, richer colors, and better ripening times.  And since they are open-pollinated, heirloom seeds always produce plants that look exactly like their parents, unlike hybrids which sometimes can be unpredictable.
