Let’s say you’ve always dreamed of a wedding in the Italian Alps. That would be far for your guests to travel. But if you could have an Italian Alps setting about an hour’s drive from New York City, you’d be programming your GPS for Magnanini Winery in Wallkill.
Tucked away on a quiet country road, this gem of a venue has all the ingredients of a rustic European wedding, from its architecture to its food offerings to its basic mindset.
Owners Richard and Rachel Magnanini, along with their family, have been bottling wine at the vineyard since 1984. A year later, Richard’s father Galba designed and built the alpine-style restaurant in which weddings are now held.
There are 13 acres of grapevines on the property, and as you might imagine, the landscape lends itself well to outdoor ceremonies and bridal portraits.
There’s plenty more to see outdoors, but let’s head back inside the winery restaurant to have a look at the reception space.
Cocktail hours take place in the ground floor wine tasting room which looks like an authentic Italian grotto (Editor’s note: as a European who has spent a great deal of time around wine grottoes in Italy, I can say this is the real deal — Regina). Appetizers homemade by Rachel Magnanini are served with wines only available at the winery.
Upstairs is the restaurant proper, a cavernous room which is surprising in its enormity upon entering the space. It is filled with many small details that give this room a very special, homey atmosphere.
Wedding food, all prepared by Rachel Magnanini, are northern Italian specialties: gnocchi, ravioli, cappoletti, salami, coppa, and prosciutto — all of it proudly handmade on the premises.
Food is served in the true Italian as a six-course, family style meal: anti-pasto, zuppa, primo piatto, insalata, secondo piatto, e dolce. And if you can still move, there’s plenty of space for dancing.
Heading back outside, your party can spill out onto the formal gardens.
The gardens were designed by an architect who made gardens in France. It is traversed by gravel paths, and punctuated by stone benches and sculpted hedges.
Beyond the garden there is a rolling, grassy lawn in practically every direction for your guests to stroll. In the autumn, the surrounding trees provide a dramatic, colorful backdrop. And a little further out, for the adventurous, there is a pond which — we are told — is a favorite resting spot for wild geese.
Magnanini Winery weddings can accommodate up to 190 guests year around. In October 2017, we will be photographing an autumn wedding at the vineyard and will update this page with additional imagery.
