There are those among us who might feel guilty about indulging in the expense of a wedding. For the guilt-ridden, it is always nice to know that there are options which allow your wedding day dollars to do good deeds. One of these options is Glynwood, a non-profit farm located outside the Village of Cold Spring in Putnam County, which provides education for farmers and promotes healthy local foods from the Hudson Valley.
The first thing couples should know about Glynwood is that it’s sprawling — almost a world of its own at the end of a very long, tree-lined road that seems to go on forever. Then suddenly the landscape opens up onto the farm with its numerous buildings and fields of livestock and all sorts of growing things. So where to start?
The heart of Glynwood — the wedding venue — is a stately ranch house dating back to the 1920’s, built by financier George Perkins as part of a dairy farm servicing West Point. Perkins’ father was a conservationist responsible for establishing the Palisades Interstate Park Commission and in 1993, the Perkins family kept with tradition by turning the 225 acre farm into a non-profit entity dedicated to rural conservation. Weddings at the site help fund its programs which include apprenticeships for farmers, a local business incubator, a CSA farm, organic and non-GMO food production for humans and livestock.
Lauren Dellolio, Glynwood’s Events & Outreach Manager, started our tour of the main house by taking us out onto the lawn and terrace where ceremonies are normally held. Couples can say their vows on the flagstones and chairs are set up on the lawn for guests. Musicians can take up a position on a balcony of the main house, from where their sweet sounds can drift down on the nuptials.
Some couples opt to reserve the terrace for their cocktail hours and receptions, in which case ceremonies are then held a little further down the lawn under a flagpole closer to the working farm. From here you can get views of Glynwood’s apiaries and chicken coops.
Cocktail hours can also take place in this courtyard outside the main house. Across from the courtyard is also a tennis court on which a tent can be set up for an outdoor reception or guest overflow.
Moving indoors to Glynwood’s main house, there is the foyer with its staircase and balcony from which brides can stage their grand entrance.
The main house also has a number of rooms in which ceremonies, receptions and cocktail hours can be held. Two of our favorites is a subdued library and a dining room with cheerful lemon colored walls. For winter weddings, events will take place entirely in these rooms, many of which have fireplaces to keep you and your guests warm.
Upstairs, the main house has overnight accommodations for the bride and groom. The bridal suite is impressive, with lots of room, fireplaces, and an ideal background for those getting ready photos. There are also a limited number of additional rooms for members of the bridal party and other guests.
In addition to lodging in the main house, Glynwood also rents several cottages on the farm.
Catering is the responsibility of couples getting married at Glynwood. Lauren Delollio tells us that within the next year or two, Glynwood will package a catering service that sources all produce and proteins directly from the farm. Meats will be procured from Glynwood’s livestock in an ethical way that uses all parts of the animal.
For after parties at Glynwood, couples may opt to use the farm’s boathouse for an additional fee. There is a nearby firepit and we are told the place looks absolutely enchanting at night when it is illuminated.
Couples attracted to the kind of real farm weddings offered by Glynwood are advised to contact the site and pay a visit early in their planning as the amount of weddings allowed at the farm are limited. “We are a working farm so we only do about 12 weddings a year to keep a balance, so spaces fill up fast,” says Lauren Dellolio. “Even so, couples can always call up to inquire about availability and we will try to help them if we can.”
