The new Adena Orchard & Vine wedding venue in Jewett, NY, just north of Hunter, offers a lot of possibilities for couples seeking a rustic upstate farm wedding. In addition to a classy main house, plenty of open space for outdoor seating, and some of the best getting ready rooms, Adena will also plant a tree to commemorate your wedding day.
Recently we had a chance to tour the venue with owner Alana Kulesa, who grew up on the 10 acre property. Over 100 years ago, the land was part of the Tower Mountain House resort, one of the great upstate resorts that attracted vacationers looking to escape hot summers in New York City. As travel and tourism trends changed, the land was later purchased by the owners of the Brooklyn-based Kirkman Soap Company, who built the main house that still stands at Adena today, as well as several barns for the Kirkman’s dairy farm operation which lasted for several decades. In 1978, Alana’s parent’s purchased the property calling it “Adena” which means “adorned, noble” in Hebrew. “I remember running around here every summer, and this place has always been special to me,” says Alana.
The first wedding held at Adena was in 2000. In 2016, Alana and her husband Kevin began a renovation of the property and established Adena Orchard & Vine as the wedding venue it is today. While the Kulesas are still working on expanding the site (by establishing a fully-functional wedding barn on the property), the main house and the grounds are already impressive.
Inside the main house there is a large kitchen for guest and caterer use, appropriate for small events.
Adjacent to the kitchen, there is an open and an enclosed patio with guest seating. Cocktail hours and small events can be staged here. Below the patios, there is a space where caterers can set up their cooking stations. Drapery can be hung over this area to screen off the cooking action.
Also inside the main house, there is a great room with an entertainment center which can be used for any number of wedding activities. Tables can also be set up here if needed. Guest capacity for this room is 50–75 people depending on table types and arrangements.
And now we come to some of our favorite features of Adena’s main house: the bride and groom’s getting ready rooms.
The bridal getting ready room is spacious and bright, with large windows allowing for copious natural light. There is an elegant sofa and tri-fold mirror, and storage cubbies for bridesmaids.
Grooms, not to be outdone by their brides, have their own getting ready room downstairs. Or should we call it a lair for the groom and his groomsmen?
The space features the “Honeymoon Saloon” — a wet bar with ample seating directly adjacent to the groom’s getting room, which is actually a cubby hole under the stairs. It’s small, but big enough for most guys.
Moving outside, there are a number of places where ceremonies can be staged. These include a large rock, a field overlooking a neighboring property, a field overlooking the nearby hills, and a pathway through the orchard where trees will be planted to commemorate your day (more on this later).
While Adena does have a barn on its property, it is currently not operational as a wedding barn. Alana and Kevin plan on renovating their barn within the next two years, or might even purchase the barn on the neighboring property.
Close to the barn is a tree-sheltered after-party area where bonfires can be lit and S’mores served.
Now, about those commemorative trees. When Alana and Kevin were married on their family’s property over 17 years ago in the first wedding held at Adena, their parents planted two pear trees in their honor. “It’s a tradition we want to keep going so all the couples who get married here can feel connected to this place long after their wedding. And if they come back, their trees will still be growing here,” says Alana.
For couples interested in holding either a full wedding or a small event (such as a rehearsal party) at Adena Orchard & Vine, packages range from $1500 to $7500. The maximum number of guests is 175 people. Portable toilets, rentals, tents, dance floors, and catering are all the responsibility of couples hosting their events at Adena.
